Overview

Summary Description:

 

This position is responsible for the safe operation of the associated equipment and/or processes, the quality of incoming raw materials, the quality of the outgoing products in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and safe work practices. The Quality Group Leader/Relief Technician is a working foreperson and must be capable of accurately testing all samples pertaining to in-process monitoring and final product analysis for adjustments by production and the determination or disposition of all products.   The position provides regulatory and compliance support, as well a laboratory testing, sample collection, and reporting to the facility.

 

The Quality Group Leader reports directly to the Quality Supervisor, with strong direct working relationships with Quality Execution Manager, and other functional department managers and supervisors.  The position at times will interact directly with corporate QA, regulators, and auditors. No employees report to the position.

Responsibilities

Quality Operations

  • Sample collection, preparation, testing and shipping of process tanks, finished goods, microbiological swabbing, and incoming materials.
  • Data entry and documentation management on sample collections and testing.
  • Laboratory troubleshooting of lab equipment, testing methods, and processes.
  • Managing programs such as calibration schedules, testing schedules, foreign material reporting, etc.

Training

  • Assist in coordinating quality training in relation to quality department functions.
  • Assist in training employees regarding PSOPs, GMPs, proper sanitation, safe work practices, good housekeeping, etc. and report when these policies and practices throughout the department are not being followed.

Employee Relations

  • Forward employees concerns and issues to Quality Supervisor or Quality Execution Manager as needed.
  • Establish and maintain an employee friendly environment.

Miscellaneous/Quality

  • Notify Production Supervisor is temperature of cheese is out of specification.
  • Perform metal detector checks and enter data into computer.
  • Run bacti tests on the beginning, middle, and end of run cheese for each product code.
  • Document temperature and weight of cheese sample every hour.
  • Complete Quality Control Report Worksheet.
  • Perform hand swab of QE Technician and General Labor gloves.
  • Test sanitizer solution.
  • Verify employees are wearing required PPE and complying with GMP requirements.
  • Re-stock supplies
  • Perform general housekeeping in work area
  • Perform monthly calibration testing
  • Any additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

 

  • Must be able to work flexible schedule in order to support 24/7 operation, including weekends, holidays, and off-shifts.
  • At least two years of prior experience in a similar role in a fast-paced manufacturing environment or in an analytical or microbiology laboratory.
  • Must be able to read and write and perform basic mathematical functions.

 

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math.
  • PCQI Certification.
  • Experience in SQF, BRC, FSSA or other GFSI standard environment.
  • Team leadership experience in a manufacturing facility or laboratory.
  • Prior work experience in dairy or food manufacturing.

  • Action oriented and the capacity to drive for results.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead others effectively, including training, coaching, and developing others.
  • Familiarity or ability to learn SAP, MES, or similar integrated manufacturing system.
  • Ability to influence and communicate upward, laterally, and downward without any direct line authority in writing and verbally.
  • High level of organizational skills and problem solving
  • Demonstrated attention to details
  • Proficient computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Capacity to demonstrate composure, display compassion, and the ability to resolve conflict at the floor level.
  • Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision.

Work Environment Description:

  • This position will be exposed to working in a wet/slippery environment with loud noise in varying degrees of temperature.
  • Specific vision may be required for this position, including close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception, and the ability to read computer screens for extended time periods.
  • Must be able to lift and carry moderate weights occasionally throughout the shift (up to 30 lbs).
  • Occasional walking, standing, climbing up stairs/ladders, bending, and reaching required.
